Nuclear NRC to Address Inoperable Safety System at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant Clarion Energy Content Directors 10.31.2016 Share By Editors of Power Engineering The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will address a maintenance failure at the 2,240-MW Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California, in which PG&E did not adequately maintain an emergency core cooling system at the plant, reports Reuters. The NRC says workers at the facility discovered in May that poor maintenance had left one of the plant’s emergency systems inoperable for an extended period of time, beginning as early as Oct. 2014. A second emergency core cooling system was operable and ready for service when needed. The NRC so far says the failure posed only a low to moderate safety risk. PG&E has corrected the condition and updated its maintenance practices to avoid similar failures in the future. The NRC discussion will take place on Nov. 15.
